Statement By The Prime Minister Of Canada
March 19, 2010
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: “In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The date is significant as March 21 marks the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa. The memory of that day serves as a powerful reminder of the evil of racial discrimination and the importance of its eradication. “Canada has an international reputation for embracing pluralism and we encourage diversity and welcome newcomers. Our Government has streamlined foreign credentials recognition to ensure that new residents and citizens can find jobs in their chosen fields quickly. Through the Action Plan for Faster Immigration, our Government is reducing the backlog of skilled immigrant applications. And increasing numbers of foreign students choose Canadian universities and contribute to the vibrant intellectual life of our colleges and universities. “But even a country as open and welcoming as Canada has been touched by racial discrimination. We have apologized to those affected by the Chinese Head Tax and to victims of the Indian Residential School system. To promote awareness, our Government continues to fund initiatives that recognize the experiences and contributions of cultural communities in Canada “On March 21, I hope all Canadians will join with me in reflecting on the need to eliminate discrimination and in showing solidarity with the victims of racial discrimination.” |
