Prime Minister Stephen Harper marks closing of Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games
March 21, 2010
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today congratulated the Canadian athletes and their coaches, as well as all the volunteers and organizers who helped make the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler an outstanding success:

“These Games were the first Paralympic Winter Games held on Canadian soil, and we could not have been more proud to host this event.  Our Paralympic athletes rose to the occasion and showed the world that the Maple Leaf represents a country of extraordinary athletes who break down barriers, set new records and demonstrate unparalleled strength.

“I commend the commitment, dedication and hard work of all the athletes and coaches who have been training hard for these Games.  You are a tremendous source of pride for your country.

“Canada's team delivered many inspiring and courageous performances during these Games.  I sincerely congratulate all of our Canadian Paralympians.  Thank you for allowing us to share in your incredible achievements and witness your spirit and determination.

“Winning 19 medals — 10 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze — Canada placed third in total medal count at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.  Both the total number of medals won and the number of gold medals won are records for Canada at a Paralympic Winter Games.

“On behalf of Canadians everywhere, I would like to thank the volunteers and organizers whose efforts showed the world what a friendly, creative, diverse and extraordinary country we have.  They were tireless and we are grateful for all that they did.

“It is wonderful to see that Canadians fully embraced the spirit of the Games.  From coast to coast to coast, we have shown the world the enormous pride we share in our athletes and our country.

“The 2010 Winter Games presented an unparalleled opportunity to celebrate and showcase Canadian athletic, artistic and cultural excellence on a national and international scale.  They will continue to provide lasting legacies for Canadian communities, businesses, athletes and citizens across the entire country.”
