Brown Elected to Co-Chair Malaria Caucus
April 23, 2009

Barrie - MP Patrick Brown and Councillor Lynn Strachan will be launching the Spread the Net/Buy a Net campaign in Barrie on World Malaria Day, April 25, 2009. The launch will showcase a video, narrated by Donald Sutherland, outlining the reality of malaria and the positive impact the spread the net campaign can have. Bed nets will be available for purchase at the launch.

Malaria is the single biggest killer of African children under the age of five and in fact accounts for one in five of all childhood deaths in Africa. Spread the Net is a program designed to raise awareness and help wipe out this dreadful disease.

MP Brown is bringing this initiative to Barrie as a result of his involvement on the Parliamentary Malaria Caucus. “I was pleased to be asked by former MP Belinda Stronach to play a role with the Caucus and proud to be elected as co-chair by my Parliamentary peers along with liberal Senator Mobina Jaffer.” said MP Brown “Barrie residents can make a big difference in the success of this effort.  We must put an end to the spread of this horrendous disease and I encourage everyone to become involved” he added.

MP Brown and Councillor Strachan will welcome the assistance of the Barrie ‘Grandmothers’ group at the launch. “Our local members are excellent advocates for the cause of Africa” said MP Brown “The ‘Grandmothers’ work in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign and will have a booth showcasing their work at the launch”

If you are unable to attend the launch and would like further information or would like to make arrangements for bed net purchases please contact the constituency office at 726-5959.  They will be available throughout the month of May.
