Examiner Column November 19th, Passport Clinic
November 19, 2009
Throughout the year I host a number of Passport Clinics. My next clinic is tomorrow (Nov. 20th) from 3-4pm at the Kozlov Center (lower level food court). The Kozlov Centre is always very generous in donating space and Sybil Goruk’s many Chamber of Commerce volunteers are instrumental in helping us complete hundreds of passport applications in one day. We are fortunate to have such great community partners.

I always make it a priority to help Constituents with passports as an added service. I am very happy to assist and clearly the response is extremely well received. My Constituency Office accepts thousands of passport applications each year. To avoid unnecessary delays it is crucial to submit accurate information and all required documentation.

Please help us help serve you better by reading some of the most frequently asked questions:

Q: “Where do I get the forms to apply for a Passport?”
A: Printable forms are available online at: ppt.gc.ca. Get hardcopy versions from most Canada Post outlets, Service Canada or my office at 299 Lakeshore Dr.

Q: “Do I need a Lawyer or a Notary to be my Guarantor?”
A: No. You only need someone with a valid Canadian passport that you have known for at least 2 years. That person can be a relative including your spouse. The Guarantor will sign and date your application along with one of your Passport photos and the photocopy of your supporting identity document. You should choose a person that can be reached all year round.

Q: “Do I actually need to send the original birth certificate with the application?”
A: Yes. If your birth certificate is lost, stolen or damaged, you will need to get a replacement from the Province where you were born. Born outside of Canada? Citizenship cards or other original documents are required. In many cases, parents are required to submit the “long form” birth certificate (Statement of Live Birth) for child applications.

Q: “How do I avoid the hassle of the full application process in the future?”
A: Renew your Passport before expiry (valid for 5 years). A Simplified Renewal Form can be completed by the applicant alone. The Guarantor, supporting documents or a birth certificate is not required. Applicants need only include their expiring passport along with new Passport photos.

Q: “Isn’t this just a Tax grab by the Government?”
A: No. The fees charged are cost neutral. The costs are $87 for each adult and $37 for each child under 16.

In a post 9/11 world, countries all over the globe are strengthening requirements for travellers. Although we have no control over what rules other nations impose on visitors, a valid Canadian Passport is important for our citizens to steer clear of potential problems met at foreign borders. Whether submitted through Service Canada or my office an accepted application will take upwards of one month to be returned to you. If faster service is required it is available by submitting your application in person to Passport Canada offices throughout the GTA.
