Barrie - MP Patrick Brown is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Public Safety Essay Contest. RuiLin Guo, a grade 9 student at Innisdale Secondary School wrote the winning submission and will receive a scholarship of $500.00 for her effort. This is the 3rd year for the scholarship and the ideas put forth by all of the participating students were excellent as usual.
The scholarship is sponsored by Stan Sinton of Sinton Transportation and the judges for the contest included Chair of the Simcoe County District School Board, Diane Firman, Trustee for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board Connie Positano and Constable John Parliament of the Barrie Police Services.
“I wanted this project to encourage our youth to take an active role in safety and security solutions for our community. RuiLin Guo is a prime example of youth taking initiative and presenting solutions” said MP Brown “I would like to thank Sinton Transportation, Trustee’s Diane Firman and Connie Positano and the Barrie Police Services for their support of this scholarship.” he added.
“Sinton Transportation has always been committed to student safety and it is only natural for us to provide the funds to sponsor the public safety essay contest.” said Stan Sinton “Community safety is key to a healthy and vibrant Barrie”.
“I feel that it's a very important issue to raise awareness for, and I want the public to know that we as a community are capable of working together towards change” commented RuiLin when asked why she wrote and submitted an essay. “There is a solution for growing crime rates amongst teenagers and no one individual is born a criminal.” she added.
MP Brown encourages all High School students residing in Barrie to put their ideas of how to make ours a safer community in essay form and apply for this scholarship next year.
