Robert Kerr Accessibility Award Winner 2009
![]() December 09, 2009 - The Robert Kerr Accessibility Award was awarded last night in Barrie Council Chambers to Heather Hollingshead. Ms. Hollingshead is the Regional Services Coordinator for the Canadian Paraplegic Association and recently celebrated 25 years with the CPA. Heather has given persons with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities outstanding knowledge, new hope and the right tools to succeed in communities across the Province. Heather employs an individualized approach when empowering people with permanent conditions to do their best in achieving their goals regardless of the barriers that they must overcome. Heather is an inspirational leader, tireless advocate and an extremely worthy recipient of this award. The Robert Kerr Accessibility Award was created in honor of local disability advocate Robert Kerr who passed away in 2008.The award recognizes an individual, business or organization that fosters an environment of equal participation by recognizing outstanding accomplishments which result in equal opportunities for persons with disabilities in Barrie. Special thanks to John Tom, owner of MEDIchair Barrie for his commitment to sponsoring the Annual Robert Kerr Accessibility Award. The award includes a commemorative plaque, $500.00 cash and acknowledgements from the Offices of the Prime Minister of Canada and Governor General. MP Patrick Brown said, “Heather embodies the values that Bob Kerr so passionately advocated for throughout his life. I can not think of a better recipient to receive this inaugural award than her.” "Heather is a very deserving recipient of this Award. Her client-focused approach and tremendous work ethic have positively impacted so many people and their families. Not only has she assisted in the rehabilitation of individuals with spinal cord injuries, but she goes further by enabling them to find equal opportunities in housing and employment. Heather's service to the community makes Barrie a better place", said John Tom, owner of MEDIchair Barrie. Ward 10 Councillor Alex Nuttall represented the City of Barrie on the selection committee. “Having worked with Bob Kerr on the Accessory Advisory Committee for the City of Barrie, it is appropriate to see Bob’s legacy of advocacy for accessibility live on through this award and a great honour bestowed on Heather. “ |
