The Government of Canada Supports Snow Goer Canada Magazine

BARRIE, Ontario, April 3, 2009 – On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Patrick Brown, Member of Parliament (Barrie), today announced funding to support the creation of Canadian editorial content in Snow Goer Canada, an important magazine for Canadian snowmobile fans.

“Appropriate tools are needed to develop and maintain a community of Canadians with common interests, like snowmobiling,” said Minister Moore. “Snow Goer Canada magazine is a good example of people who promote their hobby with content produced in Canada that represents the real issues and characteristics of this activity.”

“Publications like Barrie’s own Snow Goer Canada are important vehicles to help promote interest, safety, and fun in a uniquely Canadian tradition like snowmobiling,” said Mr. Brown. “With more than 43 000 kilometres of snowmobile trails in the province of Ontario and up to 16 weeks of snow, this winter pastime certainly can be described as a growth industry, and I am happy to see our Government support Snow Goer Canada magazine.”

“We take great pride in trying to provide coast to coast coverage of the fantastic winter pastime that snowmobiling is. Providing editorial that reflects upon the millions of Canadian snowmobile enthusiasts is neither an easy task nor inexpensive,” said Mark Lang, Publisher of Snow Goer Canada. “Receiving this contribution reaffirms our confidence in the Government’s support of Canadian magazines. We are very grateful for this.”

The Government of Canada recently invested $25 million in Canada’s trail infrastructure to build and renew multi-purpose trails for walking, running, cross-country skiing, biking, ATVs, and snowmobiles as part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The investment will provide safe and easy access to healthy living sites.

The Government of Canada is providing $23,666 in funding under the Support for Editorial Content component of the Canada Magazine Fund. In February, the Government announced that it would maintain its support to Canadian magazines through the creation of the Canada Periodical Fund, a modern, streamlined program that will replace the Canada Magazine Fund and the Publications Assistance Program. This new fund, which will be launched in 2010–2011, will help magazines such as Snow Goer Canada reflect Canadian voices and interests for years to come.
