Prime minister Stephen Harper addressed the Canadian chamber of commerce

TORONTO – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today participated in the inaugural Canadian Chamber of Commerce national business event, The Economic Edge ’09, where he discussed his outlook on Canada’s global competitiveness with some of the country’s top private and public sector leaders.

“Our government's number one priority is the Canadian economy.  We moved quickly at the start of the global recession and we are delivering the largest economic stimulus in Canadian history,” said the Prime Minister.  “We are starting to see signs of a budding recovery, but we are not out of the woods yet.  We must stay on course and finish implementing our Economic Action Plan.”

The Prime Minister took part in a question and answer session with participants where he highlighted how Canada’s Economic Action Plan is putting the economy on a solid road to recovery and ensuring the country’s prosperity.

On September 28, the Prime Minister presented “Staying on Course,” the Government’s Third Report to Canadians on the government’s Economic Action Plan.  It showed that 90 per cent of the stimulus funding for 2009-2010 has been committed and that the stimulus measures are already having positive effects.

“By investing in projects, such as making our roads and bridges safer, upgrading local community centres and arenas, and improving our college and university campuses, we are stimulating the economy and creating jobs from coast to coast to coast,” said Prime Minister Harper.  “Our government remains focussed on helping Canadians and is committed to staying on course to ensure our economic recovery is strong.”
