Prime Minister Stephen Harper participates in take our Kids to Work Day
November 03, 2010
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper spent time today showing Melanie Renn, a grade-9 student from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, how he serves the people of Canada, as part of the national Take Our Kids to Work Day. Melanie earned the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister by winning the Ultimate Dream Job Contest organized by The Learning Partnership and Scotiabank. As depicted in her winning photograph and short essay submission, Miss Renn’s ultimate dream job is becoming an archaeologist. “I was pleased to share part of my day with Melanie,” said Prime Minister Harper. “Take Our Kids to Work Day provides a great opportunity for young people to learn more about what their parents do for a living and to think about what they might want to accomplish in their future careers.” Melanie met with Prime Minister Harper at 24 Sussex this morning before travelling with him to Parliament Hill, where he gave her a tour of his Centre Block office. Miss Renn also attended Question Period after which she spent time with the Speaker of the House. The Take Our Kids to Work initiative was created in 1994 by The Learning Partnership, a national charitable organization dedicated to strong public education in Canada. Through the program, students shadow a family member or volunteer at their work, allowing the young people to explore possible careers. Each year, approximately 250,000 students participate in about 75,000 workplaces across Canada. |
