MP Patrick Brown’s Pakistani Flood Relief dinner raised $10,000 dollars for the Red Cross
September 27, 2010

MP Brown hosted a fundraiser on Sunday September 19th at Tara restaurant in downtown Barrie. There was a good local turnout and the event raised $5,000. Combined with matching funds from the federal government, $10,000 in total was sent to the Canadian Red Cross for relief efforts in Pakistan due to extreme flooding.

"I am always thankful for the consistent generosity shown by Barrie residents. There is an urgent need in Pakistan and I know this $10,000 will go towards desperately needed tents, clothing and food. This is the greatest humanitarian crisis in Pakistan’s history.
I also want to thank Tahir Nawaz my co organizer of this event his hard work. Tahir is among the many Barrie residents who have loved ones over in Pakistan." – MP Brown

Backgrounder notes:

Member of Parliament Patrick Brown recently travelled to India with Immigration Minister, the Hon. Jason Kenney, on an official visit to the Punjab and Delhi to crack down on unscrupulous immigration consultants. While he was there, he made contact with Pakistani officials, and at the request of the Pakistan government, he was asked to view the damage caused by the recent flooding firsthand.

”I have been to the slums in Mumbai, I have been to the most dangerous places in Nigeria with the Canadian government but nothing could prepare me for what I saw.
We were then taken up in Pakistan military helicopters to tour the devastation. There were camps, or more accurately tent cities as far as the eye could see. There are 20 million displaced people and 1.1 million people who have been treated for serious medical complications. Kids are contracting malaria every day, snake bites are far too common, skin diseases are everywhere and heat stroke is running rampant”. – MP Brown

The Canadian government has already pledged over $40 million to the Pakistan Flood Relief Fund and will continue to match funds to registered charities doing work in Pakistan that are pledged by Canadians until October 3rd. MP Brown urges people to make a donation.
